Hair Extensions frequently asked questions

Can I re-use the hair?

No, the hair is already pre bonded by Great Lengths. While Great Lengths maintains they have the best quality of human hair extensions, they are not designed to last forever.

Will it damage my hair?

No, as long as they are looked after in the right way. One of the reasons Great Lengths is regarded as the best is that its bonds are made of keratin, which is a natural protein in hair. The bond is applied using the Great Lengths extensions applicator, which uses less heat than a curling iron. The applicator simply moulds the bond around your natural hair and leaves it to cool. The bond is so small and light weight that it is virtually unnoticeable and causes no stress whatsoever on your natural hair. Additionally, the hair is applied in the same direction of your natural hair, unlike other extensions methods such as glues and clip-ins, which eliminates the possibility of breakage and reduces tangling.

The keratin bonds swell and shrink with the hair, which reduces the likelihood of damage. Hair swells when wet and shrinks when dried, so the discovery of the keratin bond is especially important and one of the cornerstones in Great Lengths successes.

Can I colour over them?

Yes you can colour over them, but not over the bonds. We match your extensions to your colour (or new colour). The reason for this is so we can get the bonds to blend in.

How long does my hair have to be before I can get extensions?

Approx 6-7 cm

Can I use my straightening irons?

Yes, you can use your irons. Just be careful you do not go over the bonds with the heat.

How long can I get my hair?

The Great Lengths hair comes in 30, 40, 50 and 60cm strands.

Are they easy to look after?

Yes, daily brushing will be required to avoid matting the hair. The matting of the hair is from your hairs natural shedding. If you don’t brush these hairs out then it can cause matting around the bonds. THD also have a dedicated after-care program of products that will increase the longevity of your extensions.

Before sleeping just pull back in a ponytail to avoid tangling. We also suggest sleeping on a silk pillow slip.

How do I remove them?

Once the extensions have had their day, come back into THD and we will remove them with a gel that dissolves the extensions bonds. This process is painless and easy and leaves the hair healthy and intact.

Will they match my colour?

Yes most definitely, we have a huge range of colours, and will be sure to get great colour match. During your initial hair consultation, your stylist will match your hair with the colours that best suits you. Because Great Lengths is not treated with bleach or harsh chemicals, the result is fade-resistant, shiny, healthy hair that looks and feels like your own natural hair.

Are they obvious?

No, as long as they are operated correctly they will not be visible; we will judge this accordingly at the consultation.

Can I wear my hair up?

Great Lengths hair extensions will not affect your lifestyle at all. The bonds of the extensions expand and contract with your hair and will not deteriorate over time unlike other types of extensions such as glues, waxes and clip-ins. With a little care, you can wear your Great Lengths hair up or down, go swimming, exercise and do most other things you would normally do without ever damaging the hair or the bonds.

How long do they last? What is the upkeep? Do I need regular appointments?

With a little maintenance, which includes brushing daily, Great Lengths hair will last up to six months. 2 weeks into your new look THD invites you to come back for a complimentary wash and blow dry. This is a good time frame to answer any questions you may have as well as look at how the hair has settled and give a final trim if needed. THD’s certified technicians are fully qualified to apply Great Lengths hair extensions including matching your hair with the perfect colours, blending your hair in with the extensions and proper application of the extensions that gives long lasting results and stunning looks. As your hair grows, the bond will naturally grow out with your hair.

How much do they cost?

The cost of your extensions will depend on how long you want your look to be and how many strands of extensions you would like to have in. The price can vary from as little as $100 up to and over $2000 depending on how many strands you will require to achieve your new look.

Does it hurt?

THD’s hairdressers are extensively trained in the application process to ensure the fastest and most professional result is achieved. The application process does not hurt at all and you can barely feel the difference once the extensions are completed.

It’s crucial to your comfort that you have your extensions put in by a trained professional. Even if only one hair is pulled out of symmetry it will be uncomfortable for the remainder of your new look.

What techniques are used to attach the hair extensions?

Great Lengths uses a patented keratin bonding method to attach pre-bonded extension strands on to natural hair. When the hair is pre-bonded, strands of hair are grouped together to allow our expert certified stylists to apply the extensions easily and in a timely fashion. The keratin that the bond is made out of is not a glue. It is a polymer compound whose molecular structure mimics that of human hair. Many other inferior hair extension methods use other polymers that do not behave like human hair which often lead to the deterioration of the bond and cause the hair to fall out. The Great Lengths keratin bonds allow the hair to move naturally while at the same time having a strong hold on the hair without causing any damaging. This prevents the hair from falling out, making it ideal for hair extensions. Moreover, the bond itself is the same colour as your hair and so small that that it is virtually indistinguishable from your natural hair.

Where do they come from?

Great Lengths uses 100% human hair of the highest quality. The hair is sourced from Indian temples in virgin condition. This hair is in immaculate condition as it has never been exposed to harsh chemical treatments. Genetically, Indian hair is also very similar to Caucasian hair in its basic structure. Hair extensions sourced from Chinese or European hair is unsuitable for good extensions as their quality is inconsistent and inferior.

Great Lengths uses only ‘Remy hair’ which means that the hair is collected with all the cuticles facing the same direction from root to end just as they do in your natural hair. This ensures that the hair does not tangle. Great Lengths hair is also double-drawn. This is a process the hair goes through where all the unwanted short hair is removed, twice, so that the volume and thickness of the strand is consistent all throughout its length. These properties of Great Lengths hair ensures that the extensions behave exactly like your own hair, thus blending in superbly with yours and looking absolutely natural.

Great Lengths virgin Remy hair arrives at the Great Lengths Treatment Centre in Rome - having never been dyed, bleached or processed in any way. At the treatment centre, it undergoes an exclusive process of de-pigmentation similar to that of how the finest cashmere is treated before colouring. Unlike in other extension brands, Great Lengths do not bleach or use harsh chemicals which strip the hair of its cuticle layer and damage the hair. The treatment process is exclusive to Great Lengths where no other extensions company in the world goes to these lengths to protect the hair from damage. How is the hair coloured? Does the treatment process damage the hair?

When treating the hair, Great Lengths goes to much effort to preserve the cuticle layer of the hair to protect the hair’s colour and integrity. This is one of processes that makes Great Lengths hair of exceptional quality as compared to other extension brands. The hair arrives at the Great Lengths Treatment Centre in Rome in its virgin state - having never been dyed, bleached or processed in any way. At the treatment centre, it undergoes a process of de-pigmentation similar to that of how the finest cashmere is treated before colouring. Great Lengths do not bleach or use harsh chemicals which strip the hair of its cuticle layer.

Through the de-pigmentation process, the black colour pigments in the hair are gently lifted from deep inside the cortex. This removes any colour from the hair without damaging its structure in any way leaving it a very light shade of blonde. From there on, new colour pigments are slowly inserted into the clean, empty space inside the cortex of the hair to produce the desired colour shade. This means that once colour pigment has been replaced, Great Lengths hair will continue to keep their colour much as natural hair keeps its colour from root to tip and will not fade.
